Why We Choose White Composite Resin Over Amalgam for Fillings

For over 20 years, ALFIE Dentistry has only used composite resin for dental fillings in North York, serving patients from Willowdale, Yonge and Sheppard, and the surrounding areas. Amalgam (silver) fillings, which have been used in dentistry for over 150 years, are made from a mix of metals, including silver, tin, copper, and mercury. While they were once the best option available, advancements in dental materials have led to stronger, safer, and more natural-looking alternatives. We stopped using amalgam because composite resin offers many advantages. Here’s why we made this choice and how it benefits you.
1. Preserving More of Your Natural Tooth
Amalgam fillings require removing more healthy tooth structure to stay in place. Since they don’t bond to the tooth, the dentist must shape the tooth to create a secure hold. This means removing more enamel and dentin than necessary, weakening the tooth and increasing the risk of cracks over time.
Composite resin bonds directly to the tooth, allowing us to remove only the damaged part. Keeping more of your natural tooth makes it stronger and healthier in the long run.
2. Lower Risk of Cracked Teeth
Amalgam expands and contracts with temperature changes (like hot coffee or ice cream). Over time, this movement can stress the tooth and cause cracks.
Composite resin doesn’t have this problem. Since it bonds to the tooth and stays more stable, it helps protect the tooth rather than weaken it.
3. No Leakage Over Time
Amalgam fillings can wear down at the edges, allowing bacteria to get inside and cause decay under the filling. This may lead to bigger dental problems like crowns or root canals.
Composite resin forms a tight seal with the tooth, reducing the risk of leakage and helping to prevent further decay.
4. Mercury Content in Amalgam
Amalgam fillings contain mercury, which some patients worry about. While studies show that set amalgam is safe, we prefer to offer a mercury-free option. Composite resin is metal-free, modern, and biocompatible.
5. A More Natural Look
Amalgam fillings are silver and can darken over time, making them noticeable when you talk or smile. Composite resin is tooth-colored and blends in naturally, making your smile look better.
